Most of Kingswood is on municipal water with private septic systems, and it has several lakes used for boating and swimming, plus walking trails. Kingswood Elementary sits inside the subdivision on Vrege Court, and the Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area lies beside it.

Glen Arbour

Glen Arbour is a golf community built around Glen Arbour Golf Course, with larger detached homes, many from around 2000 onward, on lots that can run over an acre. Highland Park

Highland Park is an established subdivision split in two by Hammonds Plains Road, with about 200 homes on the west side alone. Lots are often an acre or more, with drilled wells and septic systems, and the area has seen some newer construction as well. Older parts were built under earlier provincial standards that did not require a second road access.

Hammonds Plains Road and other subdivisions

The main road itself has older homes, acreages and small businesses, reflecting a village that dates to the late 1700s and was once known for its cooper shops and sawmills. Other subdivisions in the area include Blue Mountain Estates, Cedarwood, Maplewood, Perry Pond, Uplands Park and White Hills. Many homes in the community sit on large lots without municipal services.

Upper Hammonds Plains and Pockwock Road

Upper Hammonds Plains, along Pockwock Road, is a historic Black Nova Scotian community founded in 1815 by about 500 Black Refugees from the War of 1812. It is home to Emmanuel Baptist Church, whose building dates to 1845, and to the former fire hall of what is described as Canada's first all-Black volunteer fire department, now being converted by the community into the Elizabeth Mantley Youth Recreation Centre. Pockwock Lake, to the north, is the main water supply for Halifax, and the area includes rural homes and larger parcels of land.

Statistics Canada counted 1,819 people in 2021 in the settled area along Hammonds Plains Road, down from 1,859 in 2016.
