Armdale FAQ
Where is Armdale in Halifax?
Armdale is at the head of the Northwest Arm, on the isthmus between the Halifax Peninsula and the Chebucto Peninsula. It centres on the Armdale Roundabout and runs a short way up Herring Cove Road, Purcells Cove Road and St. Margarets Bay Road.
Is the Armdale Rotary a roundabout now?
Yes. Halifax converted the old Armdale Rotary to a modern roundabout in 2007, with work starting in July and planned to finish that September. As with any roundabout, you yield to vehicles already circulating and pedestrians in the crosswalks have priority.
Can you swim at Chocolate Lake?
Yes. Chocolate Lake Beach is a municipal beach with lifeguards from July 1 to August 31 on fair-weather days. The swim area is marked by buoys and is 5 to 6 feet at its deepest, and the water gets deep quickly outside it. Beaches can close after water testing, so check halifax.ca before you go.
Why is it called Chocolate Lake?
The lake is named after a chocolate factory that was one of several light industries on its shore. It is an artificial lake formed by quarrying.
What schools serve Armdale?
It depends on the street. Homes near Chocolate Lake are often in the Citadel High family (Springvale Elementary, St. Agnes Junior High, Citadel High), while some homes toward Herring Cove Road are in the J.L. Ilsley family starting at Chebucto Heights Elementary. Confirm with HRCE's School Finder for your address.
What kind of homes are in Armdale?
Mostly single-family homes and small apartment buildings. Recent listings range from detached homes close to a century old to semi-detached homes from the 1980s and 1990s, on municipal water and sewer.
Is there transit in Armdale?
