Living in the North End

The North End covers the northern part of the Halifax Peninsula, from downtown and the North Common up to the Bedford Basin, with The Narrows of the harbour on its east side. Much of it was rebuilt after the 1917 Halifax Explosion, including the Hydrostone district, now a National Historic Site. Gottingen Street and Agricola Street are its main shopping, dining and arts streets.

Homes in North End

Housing is a mix of eras. The Hydrostone, planned by Thomas Adams after the explosion, has row houses in groups of four and six plus larger two-storey houses on boulevard streets, and some have been converted into flats. Other streets have older homes, public housing such as Uniacke Square, and a growing number of newer apartment buildings. Halifax Water supplies the Halifax side from the J. Douglas Kline (Pockwock) water treatment plant.

What is the Hydrostone?
